About the Confucius Institute

The Confucius Institute at the University of Mumbai offers standardized quality courses in Chinese Mandarin throughout the year. It also facilitates scholarships for its meritorious students wanting to go to China for improving their language proficiency and experiencing Chinese culture. It organizes Chinese cultural programmes to support language learning and promoting intercultural ties and understanding.

The Confucius Institute was established in 2013 at the University of Mumbai as a result of an agreement with Hanban as the apex Chinese institution providing standard international certification and assuring quality Chinese language teaching. It is one of the over 500 Confucius Institutes worldwide and one of the two Confucius Institutes in India. The Confucius Institute

  • conducts Chinese Mandarin courses
  • offers systematic and comprehensive and interactive language learning through learning games, multi media.
  • facilitates scholarships for further Chinese Mandarin Studies in China as an organ of the Hanban.
  • provides internationally valid standard certification for HSK exams (Chinese Proficiency Test).
  • aims to promote Chinese language and culture.
  • aims to promote cultural relations between India and China.

Our Achievements

  • 2017 – 2018:
    • November 2017: Confucius Institute, University of Mumbai became an official Chinese Test Center for HSK, HSKK, BCT and YCT.
    • August 2017: B.A. in Chinese Studies commenced in collaboration with Department of German, University of Mumbai.
    • June 2017: One Semester Confucius Institute Scholarship at Tsinghua University [Dinaz Tamboli]
    • 15.04.2017 - 17.04.2017: Teachers’ Training Workshop at Ji Xianlin Centre and Confucius Institute Conference Hall, Rajiv Gandhi Centre of Contemporary Studies, University of Mumbai, Kalina Campus. [Resource Person: Prof. Yuntong Liu, Tongji University, Associate Prof. Ruojing Sheng, Fudan University & Associate Prof. Guoyan Ma, East China Normal University].
  • 2016 - 2017: Overall 8 batches (approx 230 students) of part time courses in Chinese Mandarin conducted smoothly and efficiently by highly skilled teachers.
  • 2015 - 2016:
    • March 2016: Regular Part time courses in Chinese Mandarin commenced.
    • Confucius Institute Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTSCOL) at Tianjin Normal University [Ms. Shikha Pandey - Confucius Institute Scholarship & Mr. Nishith Shah - South
  • 2014-15: Chinese Government Scholarship for Advanced course in Chinese Mandarin [Ms Shikha Pandey & Ms Ashwini Mahale].
